What Is Memory Care? Memory Aids
Memory care is specialized residential care for people living with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other forms of memory impairment.
Depending on the community, memory care may include a secured living environment, assistance with bathing and dressing, medication management, meals, activities, dementia-trained caregivers, nursing support, and additional supervision.
Not every memory care community provides the same level of care. A community that is appropriate during the earlier stages of dementia may not necessarily be able to meet someone's needs as the disease progresses.

Questions to Ask When Touring Memory Care
A beautiful building doesn't tell you everything you need to know about how your loved one will be cared for.
When you tour a community, consider asking:
- How are caregivers trained specifically in dementia care?
- How many caregivers are working during the day, evening, and overnight?
- Is a licensed nurse physically present 24 hours a day?
- How do you prevent and respond to wandering?
- How often are residents checked overnight?
- How do you handle agitation, aggression, anxiety, or refusal of care?
- What happens when a resident's dementia progresses?
- What medical or behavioral conditions could require my loved one to leave?
- Can residents remain here through the later stages of dementia?
- Can hospice services be provided here?
- How are medications managed?
- How do you handle falls?
- Is there a secured outdoor area?
- What activities are specifically designed for people with dementia?
- What is included in the monthly fee?
- Which services cost extra?
- How frequently can rates increase?
- Is there an additional charge when someone's level of care increases?
- Are respite or short-term stays available?
- How will the staff communicate with our family when something changes?
And don't be afraid to ask difficult questions.
You are not being demanding. You are gathering information about who may be caring for someone you love.
Look Beyond the Tour Find a caregiver
If possible, visit more than once.
Pay attention to the residents as much as you do the building.
Do staff members call residents by name?
Do they kneel or sit down to speak with someone rather than talking over them?
Are residents engaged or are most people sitting alone?
Does the environment feel calm?
Does it smell clean?
Can you see staff interacting with residents when they don't know you're watching?
Ask to see the memory care area itself—not just the lobby, dining room, or model apartment.
And trust yourself enough to keep looking if something doesn't feel right.
Before Making a Decision
Services, staffing, admission requirements, availability, and pricing can change.
Ask the community to provide important promises, pricing, fees, and policies in writing whenever possible.
